• Keep Your Eyes Open For Place Mats!

I know, it sounds crazy, doesn’t it? I was in a restaurant in Paris with my co-author Susan Stempleski and saw this table place mat. It is interesting to see what image it offers of Paris. There’s a mixture of Arc de Triomphe and an advertising pillar and the entrance to a Metro staton. So here’s an idea. Get the students to work in pairs or small groups and discuss the pictures.

    1 Show the picture.

    2 What are the images?

3 Why did they choose those images?

4 What impression of Paris do they give?

5 What images would you use to illustrate your town/ country on a place mat?

6 Why choose those images? What impression do you want to give?

Simples, isn’t it? But you know, the simplest solutions are often the best. Keep your eyes open for table place mats.
