• Congratulations to Robert O’Neill

    TRAINER BRIEF

Of the 1970’s and 80’s most iconic English Language Textbook writers, Robert ONeill, earned a lifetime award from the EXTENSIVE READERS FOUNDATION, a mini-Oscars ceremony presented with panache by Jeremy Harmer, an iconic writer of our own day.

Robert is one of those authors whose lines, in a textbook, mind you, stick in teacher’s minds.

I only mentioned his name when one glamorous publishing director declaimed.

‘The wind cut through Coke’s thin prison uniform like a knife.’

Coke was the hero of a famous O’Neill story, ‘the man who escaped.’ Another memorable line was.

‘Kate was what the Americans would call a cool customer.’

a borderline politically incorrect line that earned its author a warning from the emerging feminist movement. However, this one floored me. Apocryphally from, Kernel Lessons

Can you find a general English use for this phase?

‘’There is very little good fresh salmon in the market in the market at this time of the year.

    My personal favourite is:

“The rain washes memories away like footprints in the water.’

This is from ‘The Lost Secret’ , a BBC video that starred Tom Wilkinson, Miranda Richardson and the wonderful Vladek Sheybal.

Congratulations to Robert O’Neill and long may he be honoured. Like his friend and colleague Louis Alexander, another one of the greats,

Next year IATEFL is in Liverpool. Can’t wait!

I am sure that you have heard of Robert's recent sad death. He was a great friend and inspiring colleague.
